  • Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope [1998]Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

This lavish two-hour concert special, originally produced for HBO, offers ample proof of Janet Jackson's fierce ambitions. Whitney, Celine and Mariah can run circles around her small, sweet voice, but Janet brings a tough, muscular power to her live performances that none of those peers can approach, storming through myriad set and costume changes, and sustaining an aerobic pace through elaborate dance routines. As captured during this Madison Square Garden presentation of her Velvet Rope tour, Janet Jackson is, ahem, very buff indeed, not just in her well-toned physical health, but in her vocal attack. The Velvet Rope tosses up rappers, hard-rock heroism, melting romantic pop and Jackson's own brand of soft-core erotica, but the show transcends those components in its broad sense of spectacle. The star fronts a formidable battalion of dancers, singers and musicians to make her points, and while it's obvious that the musical performances have been nipped, tucked and polished to an acceptable sheen, Janet earns her props through sheer willpower.Ranging across Jackson's best-known songs from the last decade, the production is noteworthy for its intricate choreography and massive settings, in which the star seeks to match the big-budget sweep of her music videos. The live troupe is formidable, composed of a crack band and a large cast of nimble dancers, and Janet keeps pace with her aerobic presence. We'll leave it to social scientists to ponder the significance of the "Rope Burn" sequence, in which an ecstatic male fan is lashed to a chair and gets to watch his favourite sex object pole-dance. If this stalwart is any indication, Janet has already won the hearts (and more) of her faithful. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

  • Janet Jackson - Live In Hawaii [2002]Janet Jackson - Live In Hawaii | DVD | (01/12/2008) from £8.04   |  Saving you £8.21 (121.09%)   |  RRP £14.99

As Live in Hawaii highlights, Janet Jackson loves taking her clothes off in front of the cameras. On top of the eight costume changes, the cameras have "access all areas" privileges and follow Janet as she dashes off stage to change. These shots aren’t particularly insightful, but will nevertheless appeal to her male fans. With a massive stage, amazing special effects, and a huge crew of supporting artistes the show is a typical grand Jackson concert affair. Following another American mega pop star tradition, where concerts are themed fairy tale-style around "dreams" or "fantasies", the "All For You" show is supposedly located in an "alternative universe". However, it’s not a particularly radical cosmos, with one act set in a candy store (for "Runaway"), featuring Jackson dressed as a pixie. Perhaps being in another universe explains why Janet appears particularly distant from her audience, with very little interaction going on between her and the crowd. The age-old question is she or isn’t she singing live also seems particularly relevant for this show. You decide. With tracks included from all her solo albums, this concert provides a pleasurable voyage through her greatest hits On the DVD: Live in Hawaii presents colourful and glossy footage restricted to standard 4:3 format. The sound track, though, is offered in three different formats (Dolby Digital Stereo; Dolby Digital 4.1 and DTS). On top of the attractive menus, there’s a ten-minute interview with Janet, a three-minute photo gallery of shots from her concert programme, and a bizarre compilation of Miss Jackson performing "Would You Mind" at different concert venues.--John Galilee

  • Regan - The Movie [1974]Regan - The Movie | DVD | (06/09/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Regan is classic TV drama that will have you saying, "they don't make 'em like that any more". This is the feature-length pilot to what became the long-running TV series The Sweeney, starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman as the hard-as-nails Flying Squad double act. The story opens in a south London pub decorated in shades of brown so manifold that it forms a patina on the screen more normally associated with a painterly artist. It's the early 1970s, and Thaw's Inspector Regan is a lone ranger fighting on several fronts including the imminent modernisation of the police force, which he describes as a vision of "hundreds of little grey men working on top of each other, pots of tea and committees". The dialogue is clever, rich and funny. When Regan tries to persuade Carter to work with him on the case he growls: "Mary darling, I'm not trying to start an affair with you." The heroes have thinning hair and bad habits: Regan drinks whiskey in the middle of the day and constantly smokes, he's lost his wife, let down his daughter, and then loses his girlfriend (Maureen Lipman). The filming is wonderfully crafted--shots taken from odd angles, action that surprises and gritty London locations. "You're a copper. You belong like me out in the cold," Regan says to Carter in the last scene as they go off to get a drink out of licensed hours. Not the end, but the start of a beautiful relationship. --Joan Byrne
